The device registers as being plugged in, but there's no drive - for example in Disk Utility all drives have the device entry, and then under that the mount location? My busted drive only shows the top 'parent' device line, and nothing under it. I also tried the busted drive on a different computer. I did try plugging in one drive at a time. Perhaps whatever technology that made Mavericks cause problems has also been back ported to Mountain Lion? Does anyone have ideas for how I can perhaps fix or at least diagnose the drive?

I am not using any disk management software besides CCC. I have heard of Mavericks corrupting WD drives but I am still using Mountain Lion on this machine. My backup drive still seems to be fine and everything is backed up online. After a reboot, I now get a "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" error. Get Info still listed it as having data but Finder listed 0 files.
I woke it up and both my WD drives were mounted, but my main one (the one I actually use, not the backup) was showing no files. The computer had been on for awhile (usually a few days).

I also have a second drive of the same type, and I have cloned the first to the second with pre- version 4 trial copy of CCC. To prevent something similar, I very recently (just over 1 month ago) restored my data to a 4TB WD My Book USB 3 drive. For some background, my previous was a Mediasonic 4 bay enclosure set to RAID 1+0 that worked fine for 6 years and then died, corrupting all the data on 3 of 4 drives. I use an external drive as my primary data drive.
